Legend of the Sacred Water

The Altai Mountains in Xinjiang are known locally as the "Golden Mountains" - rich in gold, silver, and precious gems. The Kelan River flowing from these peaks has been called "Sacred Water of the Great Khan" by local herders, inspired by an ancient legend.
Centuries ago, when Genghis Khan's armies camped in the Altai region during their western campaigns, soldiers discovered that drinking the local river water revitalized both warriors and horses, boosting their strength and energy. Bathing wounds in this water eased pain and accelerated healing. To the Mongol cavalry, this miraculous water was a gift from heaven - and so they named it "Sacred Water of the Great Khan."

Catching Scientists' Attention

The legends surrounding this "Sacred Water" piqued the curiosity of Dr. Wang Feiteng, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, doctoral supervisor, and Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Science. He leads the Tianshan Glacier Observation Station. Together with his team, Dr. Wang traveled to the foot of the Altai Mountains, following the Kelan River upstream to its source. Here, perpetual snow and ice feed the river with glacier meltwater.

Scientific Discovery

To verify whether this water truly possessed special properties, Dr. Wang collected samples and brought them back to his laboratory. He conducted a simple but revealing experiment: placing tea leaves in two cups, then adding ordinary tap water to one and Kelan River water to the other. Minutes later, something remarkable happened. The tap water showed little change - the leaves barely opened and the water remained nearly colorless. But in the cup with Kelan River water, the leaves slowly unfurled, the water turned a rich amber, and a subtle tea fragrance emerged - just as if it had been brewed with hot water.

This remarkable "living" quality allows water molecules to penetrate cell membranes more easily, enhancing absorption by living organisms. This explains the water's seemingly magical ability to brew cold tea and promote wound healing. In 2015, a CCTV film crew joined Dr. Wang in Altay, Xinjiang to investigate further, producing a documentary episode titled "Sacred Water of the Golden Mountains" for the "Geography of China" series.
